Baccalaureate Mass

Our One Catholic ‘Ohana would like to celebrate the Class of 2010 by honoring College and High School Graduates of our parish at a Baccalaureate Mass on Sunday, May 16th at the 9am Mass.

Please send or drop off a hard copy photo of your graduate, along with the name of the school they are graduating from and the college or job they plan to pursue, to either the office or to Youth Minister John Paul.  It may not be possible for all of the graduates to attend the Mass, but we would still like their photos.

St. Damien of Molokai

The Office of the Bishop has informed us that two Damien TV Specials will be shown on prime time on KFVE-TV (Channel 5 on all cable networks):  Saturday May 8th from 6:00—7:00pm - “The Story of St. Damien of Molokai, Sacred Hearts Priest” and Sunday, May 9th from 7:00—9:00pm - “Hawaii’s Pilgrimage to the Canonization of St. Damien of Molokai.” We encourage you to watch one or both of these specials about Hawaii’s own saint.

Vacation Bible School

We are seriously thinking about having Vacation Bible School this summer for children in grades 1—7.  Next week, there will be more in the bulletin.  Vacation Bible School would be a five-day program.  Each day would be about a different topic.  We know that some of the children attend at other churches and we will be anxious to find out how much interest there would be at having classes at St. Michael’s.  Before we plan, we need to find out if there is any interest at all.  —Zola & Cynthia

Parish Calendar Planned, To Be Issued - Free to All Registered Parishioners

The Heritage Committee of the North Kona Catholic Community is producing a customized parish calendar for the upcoming year.

The liturgical calendar will cover November 2010 through December 2011, and be issued at the end of October to all registered parish families. The free calendar will post the One ‘Ohana schedule, with dates for parish celebrations, educational opportunities, feast days and religious observances, such as the Triduum.  It will also have handy Church contact information at a glance, plus attractive historical parish photos.

The calendar will be issued to all registered parish families.  If you aren’t yet registered as a parish member you can do so at the parish office during operating hours 9:30am—2:30pm (Mon) and 8:30am—2:30pm (Tues through Fri).  To receive a registration form by mail, call 326-7771; forms can also be downloaded at http://onecatholicohana.org/registration-of-parishioners.html.

Phone Book Recycling Contest

St. Joseph Elementary School is once again participating in the Phone Book Recycling Contest from May 1st through 28th. HawaiianTel has partnered with Orchid Island Rubbish and Recycle, who will be collection directories for the duration of the program at the following locations:

  • Kealakehe Transfer Station (near Kona Police Station):  Dates/Times:  Saturday only—10am to 2pm
  • Hilo Transfer Station (Leilani Street):  Dates/Times:  Monday—Friday—12noon to 4pm
  • Books may also be dropped off at St. Joseph Elementary School

Be sure to mention that you would like St. Joseph School to get the credit for the phone books you turn in.  Please do not bring your phone books to the parish office or St. Michael’s Church grounds.  We appreciate your help and support, since winning this contest means monies for the school.  Mahalo!

Spanish for English Speakers

Whether for professional, business, or social reasons, it has become increasingly more important to learn to speak Spanish.  Mr. Martín Sanchez, one of our parishioners, teaches Spanish at Kealakehe High School.  Mr. Sanchez has offered to teach Spanish lessons for us at St. Michael’s.  The classes would be twice a week from 4:30-5:30pm at Immaculate Conception Hall. The cost is $25/weekly, paid directly to Mr. Sanchez.

If you are interested, please call the parish office.

Saints Philip and James, Apostles—May 3rd

Call Philip the Gospel’s “Answer Man.”  “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”  Nathaniel asked Philip, who had proclaimed Jesus “the One about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets” (John 1:45).  Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5).  Greeks brought Philip their request:  “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21).  Philip’s answer to each question:  bring people to Jesus!  At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own:  “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8).  Jesus had three last questions for Philip:  “You still don’t know me?  How can you ask that?  Don’t you believe?”  And an answer:  “I am in the Father and the Father is in Me” (John 14:10).

Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testament Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus’ words:  “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.”  Few historical details for either saint, but lessons aplenty:  Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter challenges, “doers of the Word and not hearers only” (James 1:22)—Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Living the Paschal Mystery

The Gospels tell us over and over in so many ways that love means self-sacrifice.  We live the Paschal Mystery only when our own lives emulate the love of Jesus:  giving one’s all for the sake of another.  In many human ways we already do this and could think of no other way to act:  most parents sacrifice plenty for their children, we readily respond to others’ tragedies with gifts of money and service, we reach out to the perfect stranger on the street who is in need.  In so many ways we already act out of the love that Jesus commands in this Gospel.  Perhaps this Gospel flashback reminds us that we need only do the everyday things we are already doing with new meaning:  we share in Jesus’ mission when we love.  On the other hand, if an examination of our lives suggests that perhaps we are not as self-sacri-ficing as Jesus, then this Gospel is an invitation to love more completely.  What is at stake is a share in Jesus’ everlasting life and glory.  This is worth loving for!  - Living Liturgy™ 2010, © 2009 by Order of St. Benedict, Collegeville, Minnesota.  All rights reserved.
