Vacation Bible School

We are seriously thinking about having Vacation Bible School this summer for children in Grades 1—7.  Vacation Bible School would be a five-day program.  Each day would be about a different topic.  We know that some of the children attend at other churches and we will be anxious to find out how much interest there would be at having classes at St. Michael’s.  Before we plan, we need to find out if there is any interest at all. —Zola & Cynthia

Parish Calendar Planned, To Be Issued Free to All Registered Parishioners

The Heritage Committee of the North Kona Catholic Community is producing a customized parish calendar for the upcoming year.

The liturgical calendar will cover November 2010 through December 2011, and be issued at the end of October to all registered parish families. The free calendar will post the One ‘Ohana schedule, with dates for parish celebrations, educational opportunities, feast days and religious observances, such as the Triduum.  It will also have handy Church contact information at a glance, plus attractive historical parish photos.

The calendar will be issued to all registered parish families.  If you aren’t yet registered as a parish member you can do so at the parish office during operating hours 9:30am—2:30pm (Mon) and 8:30am—2:30pm (Tues through Fri).  To receive a registration form by mail, call 326-7771; forms can also be downloaded at http://onecatholicohana.org/registration-of-parishioners.html.

Cemetery Grounds Clean-up

On Saturday, May 22nd, we need volunteers to come forward to help us clean-up our cemeteries in time for the Memorial Day holiday.  Bring your rakes, garden tools, gloves, and hats.  Water and food will be provided. Be at one of the cemeteries at 8am to assist:

  • St. Michael’s Cemetery—Pocho
  • Holualoa Catholic Cemetery (1-mile north of Immaculate Conception Church)—Fr. Lio
  • St. Paul’s Cemetery—Fr. John

Spanish for English Speakers

Whether for professional, business, or social reasons, it has become increasingly more important to learn to speak Spanish.  Mr. Martín Sanchez, one of our parishioners, teaches Spanish at Kealakehe High School.  Mr. Sanchez has offered to teach Spanish lessons for us at St. Michael’s.  The classes would be twice a week from 4:30-5:30pm at Immaculate Conception Hall. The cost has been changed to $60 per month, paid directly to Mr. Sanchez.  If you are interested, please call the office.

St. Damien Joseph de Veuster of Molokai—May 10th

In the mid-1990s, a heavily bearded, bespectacled Robin Williams appeared on Late Night With David Letterman, whose host was clearly taken aback.  Letterman inquired as to why the wild look.  Uncharacteristically subdued, the usually manic comic responded that he was producing and starring in a movie about a most extraordinarily compassionate man, Damien, the Leper Priest of Molokai.

Some saints transcend religious and ethnic boundaries to touch the heart that beats in each human being:  Francis of Assisi; Mother Teresa; and, though Williams’ film was never completed, his admiration speaks, as does Damien’s statue outside the capitol in Honolulu, of this newest saint’s universal appeal.

Far from his native Flanders’ idyllic beauty and rich culture, Damien volunteered to bear Christ’s light into Molokai’s bleak leper colony, building decent homes, opening schools, establishing clinics, planting farms, sharing the sufferings—and the social stigma—of those which whom he delighted to identify:  “We lepers,” he would proudly say when finally he contracted leprosy.  St. Damien challenges us to identify the lepers of our own day, to examine our compassion for and our identification with them. —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Living the Paschal Mystery

Living the Paschal Mystery is as demanding as loving with the same self-sacrifice as Jesus and as easy as responding to God’s indwelling as an intimate Friend who is always with us, never forsakes us, and at all times is there for us with care and strength.  These Sundays before Pentecost when we celebrate the gift of the Spirit are so important for our daily Christian living: they remind us that as disciples we never have to feel the whole task of living the Gospel falls on our shoulders alone.  God is always present, dwelling within us, to give us the strength we need to be faithful to Jesus’ commands.  Only in this way can our everyday lives be fruitful, can we keep Jesus’ Word as our own word.  —Living Liturgy™ 2010, © 2009 by Order of St. Benedict, Collegeville, Minnesota.  All rights reserved.
