Mahalo Nui Loa!!!

My how time has passed and now my two-month summer assignment has come to an end.  I want to thank the North Kona Catholic Community for letting me be part of this great ‘ohana. My time has gone so swiftly, yet it has been a very fruitful one.  I will surely miss everyone who has made my stay most hospitable:  the Seniors Young-at-Heart Group, The Friendly Place, the Filipino Catholic Club, the Knights of Columbus, and Fr. Lio and Staff at St. Michael’s.  May the Lord continue to let His light shine upon you, and know that you will be in my constant prayers.  My Contact Information:

Next Infant Baptism Session Coming Up

The next Baptism Session for infants to 6-yr olds will be held Sunday, August 22nd at St. Michael’s. Please call the parish office to request a Baptism form.  Parents must attend the 11am Mass that Sunday (arriving no later than 10:45am to be seated up front), during which time the priest will present the families to the faith community.  The babies to be baptized will also be anointed with the Oil of Catechumens, which is the beginning part of the Baptism ceremony.  Please do not miss this part, otherwise you will have to wait until next session.

Immediately following the 11am Mass, parents and godparents must attend the Baptism Class in the parish hall at 12:15pm. At this time, you may wish to leave baby with another family member until the class is over (about an hour).  If godparents are from another parish, they must attend a Baptism Class at their home parish and a letter from their priest, stating they attended the class, must arrive in the parish office the week prior to the Baptisms.  Questions?  Call the office:  326-7771.

Additional Compassionate People Needed for the Hospital Ministry

Have you ever been in the hospital and longed to receive Jesus in the Eucharist?  Do you recall how blessed you felt when someone cared enough to bring Eucharist to you?

When you are well, it is easy to underestimate the gratitude those who are in the hospital or are homebound feel when they are visited by a Eucharistic Minister.  St. Michael’s is committed to this ministry, but we need more people to serve.  With enough ministers, each person could be assigned only two days a month.  Joining this ministry involves attending the hospital orientation, wearing the official hospital ID badge, and having a TB test.  The next orientation is Thurs, Aug. 19th at Kona Hospital. After that, Fr. Lio does a short, private training at St. Michael’s that is mutually convenient.  Your first trip to the hospital will be with an experienced Eucharistic Minister to the ill.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill and Suzie Bond who have served in the Hospital Ministry so faithfully.  Last week was their final week to visit the hospital.  They will continue to visit and take the Eucharist to the Life Care Center, however, which is also a very important ministry.  Thanks also to Frank Constantino who served in the Hospital Ministry, but is very involved in a number of other parish ministries.

If you feel you’d like to visit the hospital two or more times a month, contact Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734, or call the parish office.

Food Pantry Slips to be Distributed

This weekend at all the Masses food slips will be made available for you to take from the baskets.  Please take a slip and bring the food item listed on it with you to Mass next weekend.  According to Al Biro, Coordinator for our Food Pantry, they had 215 people come to pick up food last week Friday!  This has, so far, been one of the largest numbers in one day.  The need is great.  We are so grateful to all who give food month after month to help stock the shelves.  The food doesn’t stay on the shelves long!  Your generosity is accepted with much appreciation.

Volunteers Needed for “With Grateful Hearts” Concert

The priests and nuns who will be performing at the “With Grateful Hearts” Concert will be coming from Honolulu on Friday, August 27th. Since the Concert will be held in the evening, the performers will be staying overnight in Kona.

We need help from the parishioners in transporting the performers on Friday, August 27th from the airport to downtown Kona. The performers will be flying on Hawaiian Airlines in two groups.  The first group (of 17) is arriving on HA-518 at 9:53am, and the second group (of 15) on HA-278 at 4:30pm.

We also need host families who can provide accommodations to the priests and nuns overnight and drive them to the airport on Saturday, August 28th. They have different departure times, from 8:45am to 3:35pm.  If you can provide transportation and/or accommodations to the priests and nuns, contact Sol Ilagan at 322-4969.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

It is not too late to inquire about the Catholic Faith.  Come and see, or call and ask.  There is a place for everyone in the North Kona Catholic Community.  It might be your spouse, neighbor, or friend who just wants to know what the Catholic Church is all about.  In the end, they may or may not choose to join.  If you know someone like this, call the parish office and we can arrange to meet.  Call 326-7771 to inquire.

RCIA For Children

In September, Zola Ingram will begin inquiry for unbaptized children over the age of 7 years.  If you have children who fall into this category, please leave your name and number in the parish office.

Faith and Family Bible

Copies of a new Bible, written with families in mind,  are still available.  This Bible was developed by people who have given us the One ‘Ohana. We will, therefore, use it in our One ‘Ohana sessions, so you have time to get your copy for the next session in September.

The retail cost of this Bible is $29.00.  We were able to purchase them at a discount.  They are now $20.00. If you’d like one, ask at the Gift Shop table.  Selling these Bibles is not the desired outcome; there is no profit in just selling them.  Our goal is to get these Bibles into the hands and the lives of our One ‘Ohana families.

Bad Memory: “The recollection of an injury is … a rusty arrow poison for the soul.”—St. Francis de Paola

St. Pius X—August 21st

Presidential vetoes we understand.  But imagine vetoing a papal election!  Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol Wojtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate on the order of the Austro-Hungarian emperor.  Instead, the Cardinals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the first Pope, after a succession of nobles and diplomats, to hail from humble origins.  Nor did the papacy alter his endearing simplicity.  Tailors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them, forgetting that his old black cassock had been replaced by papal white!

Taking as his motto “To restore all things in Christ”

(Ephesians 1:10), Pius condemned the theological innovations called “modernism,” yet dramatically altered the then common practice whereby people rarely received Communion for fear of unworthiness, mandating early First Communion and urging everyone to frequent reception.  Refusing to bless troops assembled in St. Peter’s Square— “I bless peace, not war!”—he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed “Christian” Europe despite his peacemaking efforts. —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S.
