“With Grateful Hearts Concert” Volunteers Needed
The priests and nuns who will be performing at the “With Grateful Hearts” Concert will be coming from Honolulu on Friday, August 27th. Since the Concert will be held in the evening, the performers will be staying overnight in Kona.
We need help from the parishioners in transporting the performers on Friday, August 27th from the airport to downtown Kona. The performers will be flying on Hawaiian Airlines in two groups. The first group (of 17) is arriving on HA-518 at 9:53am, and the second group (of 15) on HA-278 at 4:30pm.
We also need host families who can provide accommodations to the priests and nuns overnight and drive them to the airport on Saturday, August 28th. They have different departure times, from 8:45am to 3:35pm. If you can provide transportation and/or accommodations to the priests and nuns, contact Sol Ilagan at 322-4969.
Additional Compassionate People Needed - for the Hospital Ministry
Have you ever been in the hospital and longed to receive Jesus in the Eucharist? Do you recall how blessed you felt when someone cared enough to bring Eucharist to you?
When you are well, it is easy to underestimate the gratitude those who are in the hospital or are homebound feel when they are visited by a Eucharistic Minister. St. Michael’s is committed to this ministry, but we need more people to serve. With enough ministers, each person could be assigned only two days a month. Joining this ministry involves attending the hospital orientation, wearing the official hospital ID badge, and having a TB test. The next orientation is Thurs, Aug. 19th at Kona Hospital. After that, Fr. Lio does a short, private training at St. Michael’s that is mutually convenient. Your first trip to the hospital will be with an experienced Eucharistic Minister to the ill.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill and Suzie Bond who have served in the Hospital Ministry so faithfully. Last week was their final week to visit the hospital. They will continue to visit and take the Eucharist to the Life Care Center, however, which is also a very important ministry. Thanks also to Frank Constantino who served in the Hospital Ministry, but is very involved in a number of other parish ministries.
If you feel you’d like to visit the hospital two or more times a month, contact Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734, or call the parish office.
Food Pantry Weekend
Thank you to all who remembered to bring in their food donations! Your steady contributions and kind generosity are heartfelt and much appreciated. Mahalo!
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
It is not too late to inquire about the Catholic Faith. Come and see, or call and ask. There is a place for everyone in the North Kona Catholic Community. It might be your spouse, neighbor, or friend who just wants to know what the Catholic Church is all about. In the end, they may or may not choose to join. If you know someone like this, call the parish office and we can arrange to meet. Call 326-7771 to inquire.
RCIA For Children
In September, Zola Ingram will begin inquiry for unbaptized children over the age of 7 years. If you have children who fall into this category, please leave your name and number in the parish office.
Faith and Family Bible
Copies of a new Bible, written with families in mind, are still available. This Bible was developed by people who have given us the One ‘Ohana. We will, therefore, use it in our One ‘Ohana sessions, so you have time to get your copy for the next session in September.
The retail cost of this Bible is $29.00. We were able to purchase them at a discount. They are now $20.00. If you’d like one, ask at the Gift Shop table. Selling these Bibles is not the desired outcome; there is no profit in just selling them. Our goal is to get these Bibles into the hands and the lives of our One ‘Ohana families.
Parish Calendar Planned, To Be Issued - Free to All Registered Parishioners

The calendar will be issued free to all registered parish families. Next Infant Baptism Session Coming Up
The next Baptism Session for infants to 6-yr olds will be held Sunday, August 22nd at St. Michael’s. Please call the parish office to request a Baptism form. Parents must attend the 11am Mass that Sunday (arriving no later than 10:45am to be seated up front), during which time the priest will present the families to the faith community. The babies to be baptized will also be anointed with the Oil of Catechumens, which is the beginning part of the Baptism ceremony. Please do not miss this part, otherwise you will have to wait until next session.
Immediately following the 11am Mass, parents and godparents must attend the Baptism Class in the parish hall at 12:15pm. At this time, you may wish to leave baby with another family member until the class is over (about an hour). If godparents are from another parish, they must attend a Baptism Class at their home parish and a letter from their priest, stating they attended the class, must arrive in the parish office the week prior to the Baptism. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) 1891—1942—August 9th
“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch Bishops’ condemnation of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one sitting, then declared, “That is the Truth!”
Baptized on January 1, 1922, observed then as the Feast of Jesus’ initiation into the covenant of Abraham, Confirmed on February 2, the Feast of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Paluch Co.
