Telephone Book Recycling Contest
St. Joseph Elementary School received word from Hawaiian TelCom that they placed Second in the phone book recycling contest! The number of books each school collected was 4-times that of last year. They wish to thank all of us for making this possible for them. The success of this program would not be possible without the tremendous support they receive from their parish families around the island. Mahalo!
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
It is not too late to inquire about the Catholic Faith. Come and see, or call and ask. There is a place for everyone in the North Kona Catholic Community. It might be your spouse, neighbor, or friend who just wants to know what the Catholic Church is all about. In the end, they may or may not choose to join. If you know someone like this, call the parish office and we can arrange to meet. Call 326-7771 to inquire.
RCIA For Children
In September, Zola Ingram will begin inquiry for unbaptized children over the age of 7 years. If you have children who fall into this category, please leave your name and number in the parish office.
Helping Your Neighbor—“If you truly want to help the soul of your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your heart. Ask God simply to fill you with charity...with it you can accomplish what you desire.” —St. Vincent Ferrer
Faith and Family Bible
Copies of a new Bible, written with families in mind, are still available. This Bible was developed by people who have given us the One ‘Ohana. We will, therefore, use it in our One ‘Ohana sessions, so you have time to get your copy for the next session in September.
The retail cost of this Bible is $29.00. We were able to purchase them at a discount. They are now $20.00. If you’d like one, ask at the Gift Shop table. Selling these Bibles is not the desired outcome; there is no profit in just selling them. Our goal is to get these Bibles into the hands and the lives of our One ‘Ohana families.

Next Infant Baptism Session This Weekend
The next Baptism Session for infants to 6-yr olds will be held Sunday, August 22nd at St. Michael’s. Please call the parish office to request a Baptism form. Parents must attend the 11am Mass that Sunday (arriving no later than 10:45am to be seated up front), during which time the priest will present the families to the faith community. The babies to be baptized will also be anointed with the Oil of Catechumens, which is the beginning part of the Baptism ceremony. Please do not miss this part, otherwise you will have to wait until next session.
Immediately following the 11am Mass, parents and godparents must attend the Baptism Class in the parish hall at 12:15pm. At this time, you may wish to leave baby with another family member until the class is over (about an hour). If godparents are from another parish, they must attend a Baptism Class at their home parish and a letter from their priest, stating they attended the class, must arrive in the parish office the week prior to the Baptism. Questions? Call the office: 326-7771.
Additional Compassionate People Needed for the Hospital Ministry
Have you ever been in the hospital and longed to receive Jesus in the Eucharist? Do you recall how blessed you felt when someone cared enough to bring Eucharist to you?
When you are well, it is easy to underestimate the gratitude those who are in the hospital or are homebound feel when they are visited by a Eucharistic Minister. St. Michael’s is committed to this ministry, but we need more people to serve. With enough ministers, each person could be assigned only two days a month. Joining this ministry involves attending the hospital orientation, wearing the official hospital ID badge, and having a TB test. The next orientation is Thurs, Aug. 19th at Kona Hospital. After that, Fr. Lio does a short, private training at St. Michael’s that is mutually convenient. Your first trip to the hospital will be with an experienced Eucharistic Minister to the ill.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill and Suzie Bond who have served in the Hospital Ministry so faithfully. Last week was their final week to visit the hospital. They will continue to visit and take the Eucharist to the Life Care Center, however, which is also a very important ministry. Thanks also to Frank Constantino who served in the Hospital Ministry, but is very involved in a number of other parish ministries.
If you feel you’d like to visit the hospital two or more times a month, call Cynthia M. Taylor at 960-0734, or call the parish office.

St. Monica (332-387)—August 27th
She had smiles for the neighbors, though her husband found her religion and the charity it inspired annoying. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, inwardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had borne his child out of wedlock.
Though not the first or last such mother and son, Monica and Augustine are the Church’s most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica’s, fittingly, first. To Rome she followed Augustine, then to Milan, where years of prayer—and nagging—finally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, mother and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other.
Just in time! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augustine’s tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica’s last days. At this time of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as children leave for school, may Monica’s perseverance and Augustine’s long-prayed for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope. —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Homily Points
- Every year over a hundred people attempt to scale Mount Everest. On average only four people make it to the top and two lose their lives on the way. What motivates climbers to take up this perilous journey with its threat of possible death is the thrill of the triumph of standing on the summit. What motivates us on our Christian journey of salvation is the joy of the triumph of receiving everlasting life.
- Jesus makes clear to us that this journey of salvation is hard, demanding, and always requires dying to self. We are never alone on this difficult journey, however; Jesus is walking with us, teaching us, and strengthening us with His abiding presence.
- Because the triumph of salvation is not as concrete as the triumph of reaching a mountain top, it is easy to stray from the path. To encourage us to stay the course, we need to look for the signs of new life occurring along the way. For example, we move beyond self to seek reconciliation with another; we find the stamina to accompany a dying spouse; we reach out in compassion to a neighbor in need. In all these ways we are already glimpsing the mountaintop.
Worthy Teachers—”All who undertake to teach must be endowed with deep love, the greatest patience, and, most of all, profound humility. The Lord will find them worthy to become fellow workers with Him in the cause of truth.” —St. Joseph Calasanz
