One ‘Ohana for 2010—2011

In September, St. Michael’s will begin the second year of Whole-Community Catechesis as its foundation for Religious Education.  We call R.E. our One ‘Ohana. One ‘Ohana is an innovative approach to faith formation and admittedly, all new things have growing pains.  Over the summer, we have had time to iron out the wrinkles and employ many of your suggestions.

  • One ‘Ohana moves us from a focus on children-only Religious Education by implementing lifelong faith formation for all ages and all generations, including, and especially, adults
  • Assists parents, grandparents, aunties, etc. to learn how to carry out their roles as primary educators of the Faith for our young
  • Changes the practice of catechesis as a “separate” Sunday morning program to a more collaborative program that involves all the parish ministries in faith formation and views catechesis in its connection with liturgy, Sacraments, the Church year, justice and service, and prayer
  • Moves beyond the “textbook” as the way of teaching faith formation by tapping into events of the Church year
  • Provides home kits for use in the home between sessions

One ‘Ohana for this year will focus on The Creed.  We will begin on Sept. 26th. The first topic will be I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church. There will be a total of six One ‘Ohana Sundays this year.  One ‘Ohana will begin at noon with registration and lunch. A revised calendar will be distributed to enable parents to mark their family calendars for the year.

Registration for One ‘Ohana

Registration for Religious Education (One ‘Ohana) will take place after each Mass outside the tent on Sundays—Sept. 5th / 12th / and 19th. If you prefer, you may fill out the form on the website here:  http://onecatholicohana.org/one-ohana/register-for-one-ohana.html

First Holy Communion and Confirmation

What do I do if my child is preparing for First Holy Communion or Confirmation?

  • The reception of each of these Sacraments requires two years of preparation.
  • In order to prepare for First Holy Communion, all First Graders (First Communion in 2012) must attend all six One ‘Ohana sessions this year with a parent or an adult.
  • Those who will receive First Holy Communion in 2011 must attend all One ‘Ohana Sundays, attend a scheduled meeting of parents and children with Fr. Lio and their Catechist, and must attend the eight mandatory sessions for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
  • All First-Year Confirmation candidates will attend all six One ‘Ohana sessions.  They will attend a Retreat and three mandatory meetings with their Catechist and Sponsors.
  • Second-Year Confirmation candidates will attend all One ‘Ohana sessions, a Retreat and three mandatory sessions with their parents and Sponsors.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

It’s not too late to inquire about the Catholic Faith.  Come and see, or call and ask.  There is a place for everyone in the North Kona Catholic Community.  It might be your spouse, neighbor, or friend who just wants to know what the Catholic Church is all about.  In the end, they may or may not choose to join.  If you know someone like this, call the office and we can arrange to meet:  326-7771.

RCIA For Children

In September, Zola Ingram will begin inquiry for unbaptized children over the age of 7 years.  If you have children who fall into this category, please leave your name and number in the parish office.

Hospital Ministry to the Sick

Taking the Eucharist to the hospitalized and the homebound requires deep sensitivity and compassion.  Our call for assistance with this Ministry was met with an amazing response.  I was hoping for three; seven people came forward to volunteer.  As soon as everyone is cleared by the Hospital and receives pastoral training, we will be able to cover every day except the one day each week covered by St. Benedict’s.  Our new Hospital Ministers are the following: Tammy Lapa, Christina Ramos, Pat Fornataro, Teresa Moses, Becky Wilson, Angie Haena, Trudy Bateman. I, too, will rejoin this Ministry on a regular basis.

Others who minister at the Hospital regularly are Ric Silva, Edgar & Annie Francisco, Jenny Carlstrom, Maria Garcia, Marianne Rhine, Mac McKenna, Tom Knapp, and Dick Leander (when needed).

Bill & Suzie Bond, and Annie & Edgar Francisco also visit the Life Care Center in Keauhou.  Teresa Schlecht and Claire Inman take the Eucharist to the Regency at Hualalai once a week.

We are hopeful that when we have our full complement of Ministers to the Sick, we will be able to expand our coverage to the homebound.  Right now, very few people call for Euch-arist in the home.  If anyone has a special interest in the homebound, please call.  Fr. Lio will continue to hold training sessions.  Homebound Ministers do not have to go through the Hospital training.  Sincere thanks to all of you for your generosity in sharing your gifts with other members of our faith community. —Cynthia:  960-0734

St. Gregory the Great—September 3rd

Imagine, 1400 years after death, boasting a best-selling CD!  Yet outside the Church and within, “Gregorian” chant is enjoying a renaissance.  Still, the timeless sacred music that bears his name is but part of Gregory’s legacy.  Renouncing civic service for monastic life, Gregory’s administrative and diplomatic skills prompted continual summons from the cloister.  Papal ambassador and advisor, he was eventually elected Pope himself, renowned as a wise steward of the Church’s material possessions, generous benefactor of the poor, sponsor of missionaries, and promoter of monasticism.  His liturgical enrichment of the Church endures not only in Gregorian chant, but in eloquent homilies still gracing the Liturgy of the Hours, the “Gregorian Canon” (Eucharistic Prayer I), and his spiritual classic, Pastoral Care, once presented to new Bishops at ordination.

Of countless impressive papal titles—Supreme Pontiff, Vicar of Christ, Successor of Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles—the title still so cherished that it heads official documents is the one Gregory coined to describe his papal ideal:  Servant of the Servants of God.  Together with being designated “the Great,” a fitting epitaph.  —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J.S. Paluch Co.

Just Punishment—“The punishment of the wise who refuse to take part in government is to live under the rule of the foolish.” —Plato

Burned—“Who sacrifices the conscience burns the picture to obtain the ashes.” —Chinese Proverb

No Surprises—“We are told by all spiritual writers that one important point to bear in mind, as we seek to attain humility, is not to be surprised by our own faults and failures.”—François Fénelon, Archbishop of  Cambrai
