One ‘Ohana (First Holy Communion and Confirmation)  UPDATE

For the last three Sundays, we have done registration for Religious Education. There has also been the opportunity to register online. Some people may have forgotten or did not notice that both First Communion and Confirmation will take two years of preparation.  Therefore ALL first graders for 2012 First Communion must be registered and must attend all six One Ohana sessions this school year beginning on October 10, 2010.  First Communion candidates for 2011 must also attend One Ohana plus eight other mandatory preparation classes. The same applies to first and second year Confirmation.

Looking at the registration forms for First Communion, I am worried that there are very few first and second graders whose parents have registered them. It will be very unfortunate if these children have to be kept back, but we have to follow the standards that have been set.

The registrations for Confirmation look about normal. There may be some second year candidates, however, whose names are still missing from the list. They will not be added to the list without registering.

If your sons or daughters fit in anyone of these four categories, please get the form and register them. At least one parent will attend the classes with each candidate since the parents are the primary educators.

What do I do if my child is preparing for First Holy Communion or Confirmation?

  • The reception of each of these Sacraments requires two years of preparation.
  • In order to prepare for First Holy Communion, all First Graders (First Communion in 2012) must attend all six One ‘Ohana sessions this year with a parent or an adult.
  • Those who will receive First Holy Communion in 2011 must attend all One ‘Ohana Sundays, attend a scheduled meeting of parents and children with Fr. Lio and their Catechist, and must attend the eight mandatory sessions for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
  • All First-Year Confirmation candidates will attend all six One ‘Ohana sessions.  They will attend a Retreat and three mandatory meetings with their Catechist and Sponsors.
  • Second-Year Confirmation candidates will attend all One ‘Ohana sessions, a Retreat and three mandatory sessions with their parents and Sponsors.

One ‘Ohana for 2010—2011

The One ‘Ohana will take place in the tent on Sunday, October 10th at 12noon.  The date is two weeks later than previously scheduled.

The topic for all the sessions this year will be The Creed.  Each Sunday, we all say The Creed together after the Homily.  Often without thinking about the words, we profess our belief in all the basic tenets of the Catholic Faith.  In our six One ‘Ohana sessions for the year, we will look at each one separately.  Our first session will be I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church.  What does that mean and how do you express that belief in your daily life?  The Creed is much more than a prayer we recite.  It is a prayer to be lived.

One ‘Ohana is Faith Formation or Religious Education for everyone.  It is our way of teaching adults how to form our children in the Faith.

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

It’s not too late to inquire about the Catholic Faith.  Come and see, or call and ask.  There is a place for everyone in the North Kona Catholic Community.  It might be your spouse, neighbor, or friend who just wants to know what the Catholic Church is all about.  In the end, they may or may not choose to join.  If you know someone like this, call the office and we can arrange to meet:  326-7771.

RCIA For Children

In September, Zola Ingram will begin inquiry for unbaptized children over the age of 7 years.  If you have children who fall into this category, please leave your name and number in the parish office.

Two More Generous People Needed

We need just two more compassionate people who are willing to donate one hours two times each month to take the Eucharist to the Hospital.  Including your transportation time, that equates to 24 hours per year or one day out of 365 days.

There is a hospital orientation scheduled in October. To sign up for that call Priestly at 322-9311 and he will tell you what to do. Father Lio will train you about the pastoral aspect of being a Minister to the Hospital. Either an experienced Hospital Minister or I will accompany you for your first visit or until you are comfortable. If you are willing to participate in this Corporal Work of Mercy, please call Cynthia at 960-0734.

National Federation of the Blind

The National Federation of the Blind—Voice of the Nation’s Blind—now offer meetings locally, creating ideas and inspiration for the visually-impaired and those with low vision.  Correction!  Scheduled meetings are held the second Monday of each month at the Regency at Hualalai in the Chapel (4th Floor), on Oct. 11th; Nov. 8th.  The address is: 75-181 Hualalai Road.  Contact Brandi Konrady at 989-9299 to RSVP. Email:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Please Note!  The parish office has information on the Hawaii State Library For the Blind and Physically Handicapped.  They have some great programs, including a “talking books” program which makes unabridged books/magazines available via special tape and DVD formats.  See their webpage: www.librarieshawaii.org/locations/oahu/lbph.html.  Their staff is very knowledgeable and patient—and there’s no charge!

Preparation for Christmas Quilts & Crafts Bazaar

On two separate weekends around Thanksgiving, St. Michael’s Quilt Group “Holy Kapa” will be holding our annual Bazaar.  If you have any craft/quilt items you’d like to make or donate to this sale, they would be most appreciated.  We hope this notice will give you enough time to work on the items you wish to donate.  Items should be new and unused.  Last year our Bazaar was a great success.  Can we do it again?  All profits will be donated to the parish  Building Fund.

Thank you,
Wilhelmina van den Boom, Chairwoman

ember 3rd issue of the Catholic Herald had an article of interest to all who have a special passion for social justice and preferential option for the poor. Several young people who are members of the Catholic Worker Movement are now living in Honolulu and planning to establish a Catholic Worker Community in our Diocese. They have begun a Catholic Worker newspaper for the island of Oahu. Ultimately, it is their hope to open a Catholic Worker Home of Hospitality for the homeless.

The Catholic Worker Movement was begun by Dorothy Day in New York. There are now 185 Catholic Worker Homes in the world. The cause for her canonization was opened at the request of Cardinal John O’Connor of New York City and was continued by Cardinal Egan until his recent retirement. Dorothy has been given the title Servant of God. During her lifetime, many people called Dorothy the “Saint of the poor.” She insisted that she never wanted money spent on canonization because it was all money that should go directly to caring for the poor and homeless.
