Fr. Jim Moran
Dear Parishioners of NKCC,
It has been a joy to have been a part of this wonderful and vibrant parish family these last three months. It has been an affirming and challenging experience. However, the time unknown to either of us brings changes, some of which we expect and some of which we do not expect. The unexpected is the brevity of the time that was allotted to us, and so it is that our time together is culminated. I shall return to my religious community, The Congregation of the Oratory in Rock Hill, South Carolina. I do not know as of this time what ministries I may engage in, but it may be something from Retreat work to Campus Ministry. The important thing will be that I respond to God's call as each of us must do.
I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your love and support in these months we had together. I especially want to thank Fr. Lio for his leadership and direction, and Fr. John Fredy for his fraternal support in ministry and priestly life together. I also want to thank Cynthia Taylor for her support. I also thank John Paul Nardelli, our Youth Minister, for his support in the even more brief time we had together. To those of you who worked with me in the area of Liturgical Ministries, a great mahalo for your cooperation.
If you wish to contact me, here is my address:

ONE `OHANA — GENERATIONS OF FAITH
You are invited to attend our Faith Formation (Religious Education) Program on Sunday, October 25th at 12noon in the tent. We will serve lunch, followed by singing, prayer, learning activities, and reflection. One `Ohana is for the whole family. We welcome people of all ages. This will be the first of five events between October 25th and June, 2010. Registration forms are available in the parish office.
Mahalo to the many volunteers... for our One `Ohana Intergenerational Faith Formation program. If you offered to help with activity or meal planning, facilitation, set-up, clean-up, or in any way – there will be a short meeting in Kamiano Hall this Friday, Oct. 16th at 6pm.
Some of our families with children have not yet registered. We would like to stress the fact that THIS IS OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM THIS YEAR. Even if your child is attending First Holy Communion or Confirmation Classes, they should also participate in the One `Ohana sessions. You may pick up a registration form in the office or get one on the parish website.
SAINT DAMIEN DE VEUSTER OF MOLOKAI
At last the great day the Islands of Hawaii have yearned for is upon us! Sunday, October 11th, Pope Benedict XVI will canonize Fr. Damien a saint. What a joy it will be for us the next time we sing the Litany of saints to hear the name of one of our own... "St. Damien, Pray for Us." While not everyone is able to be in Rome for the canonization, the Church in the Diocese of Honolulu will have the opportunity to celebrate its joy as a relic of St. Damien will be presented for Veneration in the various Churches of the Diocese.
The Relic of St. Damien will be received by the North Kona Catholic Community on Sunday, Oct. 18th with a procession of a picture of St. Damien and the Relic at the beginning of the 7am Mass at St. Michael's. At the conclusion of the Mass there will be an opportunity for Veneration of the Relic.
The Relic will next be received at Immaculate Conception Church at 9am. Here the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated.
At 2pm in the afternoon the general public will be invited to join the Catholic Community in an Ecumenical Prayer Service at St. Michael's (tent). Refreshments will be served following the service.
At 6pm the Spanish Community will receive the Relic and after their Mass there will be Devotions celebrating St. Damien.
Each of the above celebrations will provide opportunity for the Veneration of the Relic of St. Damien. We do hope you will join in the celebrations praising God for one of our own who has made it: St. Damien, pray for us.
A COMMUNAL CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK ... will take place Sun?day, October 18th at 9am at Immaculate Conception Church-Holualoa. If you are seriously ill or will undergo surgery very soon, or if you have a loved one who is ill, we would like to invite you to come and pray for healing and receive the Anointing of the Sick and also venerate our new saint, St. Damien.
"Because it should be treated as a person from conception, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed like every other human being." —Catechism of the Catholic Church #CC2323

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Every child in our parish has a right to participate fully in our faith community. However, there are children who may not manage well in regular classes for sacramental preparation. Working in small groups with Catechists trained to work with children with special needs, these young members of our faith community can receive their First Holy Communion and continue with their religious education.
We are fortunate to have husband and wife Catechists, Ben and Joanne Agdeppa, who attended a diocesan training on how to prepare children with autism for First Holy Communion. From their personal experience, they will encourage you to give your child the opportunity to grow in their faith. Joanne has materials to share with moms who are struggling with this issue. For more information, you can reach Joanne at 987-6796.

OCTOBER BAPTISM CLASS
Please note that the next Infant Baptism Session will be held on Sunday, Oct. 18th, with Baptisms taking place the following weekend, Oct. 24th/25th. If you wish to baptize your child this month, please do the following:
- Call the office (326-7771) to request that a Baptism form be sent to you. The form must be completed and in the parish office no later than Thursday, Oct. 15th.
- Parents, godparents, and children must all attend the 11am Mass on Sunday, Oct. 18th. Please arrive for the Mass no later than 10:45am in order to be seated in one of the front rows of the tent. IT IS MANDATORY TO ATTEND THIS MASS. Parents and children will be presented to the faith community, and the children will receive the Anointing of the Catechumens during the Mass. Do not arrive late for the Mass! If you miss the presentation and/or the anointing, you will be missing part of the Baptism ceremony, and must wait for the next session to have your child baptized. The next session will not be until January.
- Immediately following the 11am Mass on Oct. 18th, parents, godparents, and children must attend the Baptism Class, which begins at 12:15pm in Kamiano Hall. During this class, you will sign up for the Mass at which you would like your child to be baptized. Paperwork for the Baptisms will not be accepted during the class.
- Attend the Mass the following weekend (Oct. 24-25) to have your child baptized. A Baptism candle and Certificate will be given to each family during the ceremony.
If you should have any questions, please call the office.
