The book for this week is Invictus by John Carlin. The story will take you once again to Africa, this time to South Africa. Many of you have probably already seen the movie and understand how Nelson Mandela ingeniously used the sport of rugby to unite his country and spur the Springboks to win the World Cup in 1995.
What the book will provide you with is some additional background about the 27 years of Mandela’s imprisonment and the mediation in which he was involved even before his release. It sounds almost trite to say that this is one of the most inspiring stories you will ever read.
- Racial inequality
- Working toward the common good
- Solidarity
- Mediation rather than violence as an effective way of working toward peace
