Dear Colleagues:
This week, everyone is thinking about “Tax Day,” so let's make sure that when Congress works on tax policy, the needs of low-income people aren't forgotten.
Please call your senators and representative at 1-800-826-3688. Urge them to protect and strengthen key tax credits–the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit. These tax credits make a big difference for low-income workers and their families.
As Bishop Murphy said in a letter to Congress: “The Catholic bishops are strong supporters of the child tax credit that assists families in raising their children. … Our faith calls us to stand up for these families and children and insist their needs should take priority. We believe it is a matter of simple justice.”
This year, taxes will be near the top of the agenda in Congress, and key committees are already starting to debate the issues. Your call will help Congress decided which tax policies to change and which to renew, and most importantly, remind our elected officials not to forget the needs of low-income people. If Congress does not act, millions of workers will receive smaller tax credits, which means less money for meeting basic needs and at least 1.5 million people–including 800,000 children–will fall back into poverty.
Please call your senators and representative today.
Thank you,
Thom
