Congratulations to all those who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Michael’s this weekend.  The nine teenage Confirmandi, in a bi-monthly group setting, were prepared by their parents.  They demonstrate in a very real way that parents can serve effectively as the primary teachers of the faith to their children.  These parents have shown us the very best that we can hope to achieve in our One ‘Ohana approach to religious education.

Two weeks ago, Robert Matsumoto facilitated the Confirmation Retreat for teens, parents, and sponsors at the beach.  It was a wonderful occasion for all to pray, share and prepare for today’s celebration.

Congratulations to Fr. John Quintero, and the parents and sponsors of the 30 Confirmandi in the Hispanic community.   Fr. Marc Alexander will administer the Sacrament at the 6pm Spanish Mass today.  Last weekend, separate retreats at Immaculate Conception and St. Paul’s were held for those preparing to receive the Sacrament and for the parents.

Last weekend, we welcomed ten babies into our faith community.  Parents brought their children to the 11am Mass on April 18th.  Parents offered their babies’ names; the babies were then anointed with the Oil of Catechumens.  After the Mass, the parents attended a session to reflect on the responsibility of raising a child in the faith.

On Saturday and Sunday of last weekend, the ten babies received the Sacrament of Baptism.  We welcome Cayden Agonoy, Eliana Arboleda, Julia Bowman, Siena Caberto, Tevin Candelario, Mikkel Gantala, Zane Keith George, Kiliana Lagapa-Wheaton, Eislie Liberato, and Maxlen Rolmay. On May 30th, Milinda Garcia will be baptized at the 9am Mass.

Thanks to the Knights of Columbus for doing the Easter Feast Day again this year.  It was so heartening to see our children having fun and enjoying a good time together.  It was an opportunity for parents, also, to get together with other parents.

We are preparing for the May One ‘Ohana gathering.  It will be held at 12noon on Sunday, May 23rd. As usual, we will begin with lunch after the 11am Mass.  This month, we will modify our approach to provide more help to the parents with children from Grades 1-5.

Our One ‘Ohana topic for May will be peace and non-violence.  Violence has become such a part of our lives that some people become immune to its existence.  We read about it in newspapers; see it in movies, video games and television shows; and some of us live with acts of violence in our families every day.  It is our responsibility as parents, teachers, and faith community to provide a safe environment for our children.

Prayers and good wishes to Fr. Marc Alexander on the 25th anniversary of his ordination!  Fr. Marc is the Vicar General of our Diocese.  We also congratulate Fr. Maurice Cardinal who is the Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Hawi.  Fr. Maurice is celebrating the 60th anniversary of his ordination.  After so many years of service in the vineyard of the Lord, Fr. Maurice is retiring.  Father has been very active in this Vicariate.  He has been a wonderful shepherd to his flock.  The people of Hawi will miss him.  We wish him continued health and happiness.  God bless our families.    —Fr. Lio
