Friday, June 11th was the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. That Feast is always celebrated 19 days after Pentecost. Last year, on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, the Pope declared the beginning of a “Year for Priests.” Although that special year of prayer for priests is over, I ask you to please continue praying for priests all over the world that we may be true and steadfast to our vocations to the priesthood in the Catholic Church.

Last Tuesday, we welcomed Nick Brown. Nick is presently a seminarian preparing for the priesthood to serve in this Diocese. Nick is studying for the priesthood in Hales Corner, WI. He will be with us working in the parish until August 8th after which he will return to Honolulu and then, on to Wisconsin to begin another year of study. I have no doubt that you will share with Nick the warm hospitality that characterizes the community of St. Michael’s. In turn, you will all grow immensely fond of him.

Congratulations to all the children in both the English and Hispanic communities who received Communion for the first time. I pray that this was but the first of a lifetime of Holy Communions. Congratulations also to Kana’i Puou Mendez, Chaina Parker and Sedona Harris whose names were inadvertently omitted from the list of First Communicants last week.

Thank you to the FCC for a very enjoyable dinner dance on Saturday, May 30 at the King Kamehameha Hotel. We are grateful to the committee who worked so hard to provide great food and colorful entertainment. FCC raised $3000. They are donating $2000 of this to St. Michael’s Building Fund.

On June 17th, I will present our building plans to Bishop Larry. Soon after the necessary approvals are given, I will be able to share the schematic drawings with all of you. The architect has worked all these months to provide a new St. Michael’s Church with an old St. Michaels’ look! It will be the image of  St. Michael’s 150 years after the original church was built.

God’s blessing for a happy week.

Peace to each of you,
Fr. Lio
