Ordinary time is anything but ordinary when it comes to a number of the saints whose feasts we celebrate during this Liturgical Season. On June 24th, the Church celebrates the birth of Saint John the Baptist, a pivotal figure in salvation history. In addition to Jesus and Mary, John is the only saint whose birthday is celebrated on the Church calendar. Of John, Jesus said, “Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, ‘See I am sending my messenger ahead of you who will prepare your way before you.’”( Luke 7: 27) John is called the forerunner of Jesus. It was through him that Jesus, the Messiah, was first made known in Israel.
Today at the 11AM Mass, the children who are to be baptized next week will be introduced to our Faith Community. The parents will announce their baptismal names and Father will anoint these children with the Oil of Catechumens. This particular oil is used as an “exorcism” prior to the rite of Baptism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that an exorcism in the Baptismal rite is a prayer to protect from the influence of the Evil One. It is an ancient tradition. Father anoints the baby’s chest. Next week, each of these children will be baptized.
Thank you for your participation in St. Michael’s effort to support the American Cancer Society. Our parishioners purchased 200 bags which will help to create the field of lights in remembrance of those who have died and those who have survived cancer. The Relay for Life will be held at the Old Airport on Saturday, June 26th beginning at 6PM. Through your generosity, we will donate $1,025 to ACS for education and research.
The Building Plans have been presented to KVDC and the Diocese of Honolulu. We will wait for the approvals.
