Save the Date: August 27, 2010
Hopefully, many of you have already given us your RSVP to the West Hawaii Vicariate celebration scheduled for the evening of Friday—August 27th at the Old Kona Airport Pavilion. Invitations were included in last week’s bulletin. There was a cutout in the bulletin for you to clip out and place in the basket at the entrance to the tent. If you haven’t yet responded, look for the cutout in today’s bulletin. The event is free!
You are all invited to attend, along with parishioners from Annunciation-Waimea; Our Lady of Lourdes-Honoka’a; Sacred Heart-Hawi; and St. Benedict’s/St. John’s. A delicious dinner will be served between 5pm and 6pm. St. Michael’s is providing the food along with contributions from the other parishes.
At 6pm, Bishop Larry will give the Invocation and the With Grateful Hearts Concert will begin. The entertainers will be the priests, sisters and brothers of the Diocese of Honolulu. The purpose of the Concert is twofold: to entertain; and to encourage new vocations to the priesthood and religious life from our Diocese.
During an intermission in the Concert, Bishop Larry will present awards for volunteer service in ministry to individuals from each parish. Some of you may remember the Island Treasures Program of the past that was sponsored by Catholic Charities. Each year, a person or couple from each parish was honored in Honolulu for their service in ministry.

Living Treasures Honorees from NKCC
The pastors in the West Hawaii Vicariate decided to reinstitute that tradition in our own Vicariate. It is now called Living Treasures of the West Hawaii Vicariate. Those who were selected from the North Kona Catholic Community to receive this year’s awards are Melvine Kuali’i (top left), Tommy Duarte (top right), Arthur & Theresa Mahi (bottom left), and Aniceto & Rosalia Ramirez (bottom right). This occasion, however, is one in which we express our appreciation to all those who have served in the various ministries of our parish. Our parish is blessed with generous volunteer lay ministers who work tirelessly to spread the message of the Gospel.
Some of you may have heard that while we will indeed celebrate the Feast of St. Michael, the patron of our parish, we will not have the festival at Hale Halawai this year. The Sunday Liturgy will include joyous music for the occasion and hula. Immediately after each Mass, there will be a sharing of favorite desserts and coffee. This was my decision. Behind the scenes, there is a tremendous amount of energy going into preparing for the August 27th event (Concert). It seemed to me that doing two major events within one month would be too much for everyone.
You will find an insert in your bulletins about voting (click here for information about voting in Hawaii - from Office of Elections/State of Hawaii). This information comes to us from the Diocese. It is simply a reminder of our responsibility as American citizens. Registration for the Primary Election is due prior to August 19th. Later in the month, there will be more information provided about the issues that will be voted on this year. The Catholic Church does not endorse any particular candidate(s), but the Church does discuss issues that impact our lives as Catholics.
Peace in Christ,
Fr. Lio
