The Twenty - Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I – 2 Kings 5:14-17

Reading II – 2 Timothy 2:8-13

Gospel – Luke 17:11-19

God Revealed to the Nations -   Our extended lesson in discipleship continues this weekend with a focus on the centrality of thanksgiving to the Christian life.  We hear stories of foreigners who experience the healing, cleansing power of the God of Israel and give the Lord thanks.

In today’s episode from the Book of Kings, the Prophet Elisha cures a foreigner named Naaman of his leprosy.  Naaman returns to thank Elisha and pledges to worship only the God of Israel from that day forward.

The Gospel presents the story of the cleansing of ten lepers.  It is the Samaritan—also a foreigner—who returns to give Jesus thanks and give God glory and praise.  “The Lord has revealed to the nations His saving power,” sings the psalmist.  “Sing joyfully to the Lord ... Sing praise” (Psalm 98:2, 4).  Copyright, J.S. Paluch Co.
