This week’s Gospel contains a number of ideas for reflection. It begins, however, with the disciples going fishing on the Sea of Tiberius. Unfortunately, they caught nothing in their nets. Who likes fish without a single catch? Jesus, who appeared to them on the shore, told them to cast their nets again on the right side of the boat. As you might expect, their nets were heavy with fish. The disciples were learning about the role they were assuming as fishers of men.
Considering just this one part of the Gospel story, I am reminded that in two weeks we will Confirm and send nine of our young people and several adults out to carry the mission of Jesus by sharing the Good News. They will be anointed in the Holy Spirit and receive the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit to strengthen them in their resolve to help build the community of faith wherever they go in the future.
Confirmation will take place on May 2nd at the 4pm Mass. I would like to see as many members of the parish as possible attend the Mass. Confirmation is a big event in the life of a Catholic. Let us show our support and celebrate with them, their parents and their sponsors. The 4pm Mass on Sunday is not usually very crowded so there is a seat for you.
The Vicar General of the Diocese of Honolulu, Fr. Marc Alexander, will come to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Hispanic Community will have their Confirmation at the 6pm Mass on the same day.
Thank you to all who attended the One Catholic ‘Ohana last Sunday. This is the direction our parish is taking for faith formation (or Religious Education). A special thanks to the volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make it all happen. Incidentally, we can always use more volunteers to help our program grow. The next One Catholic ‘Ohana will take place on the Feast of Pentecost. - Fr. Lio
