The teens in our parish are becoming more aware of the plight of other teens just like themselves, except for the fact that those teens are homeless. As they learn more about the mission of Jesus to bring good news to the poor, give sight to the blind and set captives free (Luke 4), they have decided to make this their mission by going out to meet and minister to the teens on the street in very simple, practical ways.
Last Friday, 11 of our teens set out with their Youth Minister to discover where homeless teens live and hang out in very close proximity to St. Michael’s Church. The Youth Minister, Thelma Bacxa, is very experienced in working with disadvantaged homeless kids. Our teens were surprised to find that some of them pass by these invisible young people and their homes in the brush very often. Although they didn’t meet any of the homeless youth during this experience, they had a vigorous discussion when they returned to the Church about the circumstances under which homeless teens and young adults must survive. The middle school children who are not old enough to do this service stayed behind to put together the items that are being donated by Christ Church Episcopal for this ministry by our Youth. This provides a special role in the ministry for the younger members of the Youth Group.
During the Lenten Season, the Youth are participating in the Stations of the Cross every Friday. They are also helping serve the simple meal prepared by the Liturgy Committee after Stations. In many different ways, they are learning the meaning of service as an integral part of the journey in faith.
