Looking at the damage that occurred around us in Kona from the tsunami on March 10-11, we must be so grateful that our property was spared. Although it is true that we have no church building, we still depend on the stability of the tent for our Masses. As close to Ali’i Drive as it sits, it remained totally free of water and wind damage. St. Michael was assuredly on duty!
I apologize that it became necessary for me to cancel Stations of the Cross at St. Michael’s last Friday. Some of you, I realize, were inconvenienced by the decision. Civil Defense said they would not reopen Ali’i Drive until 5PM so rather than have people waiting to get onto Ali’i Drive, it seemed most practical to cancel for that day. We are back on schedule and I appreciate your attendance. Each year, the number of people who come to Stations grows.
The place where our thoughts, prayers, and donations should be going right now is to the victims of the earthquake in Japan. We have seen the horrible aftermath of other earthquakes in recent years, but none like this one that we were able to watch happening second by second in real time. Many of our friends in Hawaii have family and friends affected by this earthquake and tsunami. We must extend our hearts and hands to them.
Please follow the news about our Tennis Tournament. It is our next major fundraiser for the Future of St. Michael’s.
Peace in Christ,
Fr. Lio
